Post 10 concept map- Story Time

Story Time

RL.K.7

With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear. (i.e. what moment in the story an illustration depicts)

Also using computer as well as paper to show that they can use both methods for learning a story through pictures and understanding both.

I.      I.  Have different stories

Children need guidance when it comes to a fun reading project.  Let them read along with the power point/teacher.  Have at least 5 stories to go over with the class.  Maybe from the library, highlight magazines, or mother goose that have action and pictures that depict the story well.  Have these pictures to hand and on power point.

A.        A. Read out loud without pictures on power point

B.        B. Have pictures ready to pass out and saved on computer to add

II.    II. Break into groups

Have them break into groups or with the desks being four to to a section let that be a group. Have them have at least two stories for each group to they can compare each story and its pictures.  Also have power point go through action words and pictures.  Also have other pictures in the pile that maybe similar and see what they come up with.  If there are computers for each group have them add the pictures to the power point. Have them pick one story they want to show.

A.             A. 5 groups max

B.             B. Each have different story with pictures

1.                              - Have 2 stories per group

2.                              - Mix different pictures

III.    III. Ask/answer questions

While they are in groups have a question page or have it on power point for them to answer all of the reasons on why, how and what. Make sure they understand how to add them to power point if available in class.

A.             A. Why/ Reason

B.             B. What and reason

IV.    IV. Have discussion

Within the group sit down and discuss the reasons that they have come up with and the reasons why they chose that picture.  Is there any other picture they would change or did they have any issues in picking out the picture, could there be more than one picture for a section of the story. Have each group come up and show there story on the board while adding the pictures to the power point to show class.

A.                A. With the class on power point screen

B.                B. Within the group on computer if possible

V.     V. Create own story

After this hey can sit back at their desks and have them make their own story about what they did on that day or any day of the week. Have them draw what they are doing on paint to show what they did.
They may type what they did or write.  Have a work page for this activity as well, this will help to understand the keyboard but they need to learn to write it as well. It is ok to use stick figures on paint.

A.               A. Discuss within their group what they did

B.              B. Make own story in paint

  1. I really appreciate that I can read all of your text from your diagram, when I can see it all at a glance, it makes it much easier to read all of the information presented.

  7. Make sure to move a little slower when you're talking. But your ideas were great and the concept map was organized!

  8. I like the website you had with multiple story ideas. Making kids create their own story keeps them engaged in the lesson.

  10. The website you found for books related to the Common Core was a very good resource. I think that using powerpoint may be slightly advanced, but using paint would be good to help them to develop technology skills. Creativity is very important in a kindergarten class!

  11. This is really great for kids to really put their own input and output into a lesson. They can choose their own stories to read and then create their own stories at the end.

  12. What stories will you use? And is this going to be a one day activity? Because if not, it should be. A good idea, I think there could be alot more detail though and activities.

  14. Will the student groups present their discussion to the class?

  15. I liked your idea about incorporating creativity in your lesson. I think you could have been a little more specific about the books the children would read, and maybe assign them a book rather than letting them decide since they are kindergarteners.

  16. It is a good resourceful book website. Maybe only give them one story, having too many may be too hard for kindergarten.
